400 Lonely Things
En 1988, Craig Varian y Jonathan McCall comenzaron a producir música y fue en 2002 cuando decidieron llamarse “400 Lonely Things”. En 2020, McCall fallece y Varian queda como único miembro del proyecto.
Varian describe a 400 Lonely Things como la “Oscura New Age para la Oscura Nueva Era”, cuyas composiciones se basan en capas de sampleos de sonidos instrumentales envueltos en loops y drones, junto a sombrías melodías que crean densas atmósferas cercanas al dark ambient. Varian hace énfasis en el reciclaje y en tal sentido el sampler tiene un rol preponderante al momento de componer la música.
El sello inglés Cold Spring lanzará el 9 de enero de 2026 dos álbumes: “Creature Comforts” y «Why I Went To The Woods» que incluyen dos CD’s cada uno. Se indica en la nota de prensa que “Creature Comforts” es complementario a «Why I Went To The Woods», aunque en términos temáticos no están relacionados, sino que son “las dos caras de una misma moneda, por lo que se publican conjuntamente. La moneda, en esta analogía, es la elección nacional de 2024 y sus efectos en el mundo”, y en las emociones del propio Varian».
Ambos discos van acompañados de un folleto con pinturas de David Irvine, quien también realiza el arte de las portadas. Aquí tenemos con los dos álbumes, alrededor de cuatro horas de música.
“Creature Comforts” está asociado a las canciones de cuna que han sido muy oportunas para Varian en estos tiempos difíciles que se viven.
Un tono nostálgico cruza todo este disco con un collage de samples de carácter cinemático; como aquella sesión orquestada alada que proponen, “Once Upon a Time”, entre otras canciones. Los tiempos oscuros son palpables en tracks como “The Moth of Ending” y en la canción que da título al álbum y que también cierra al mismo.
«Why I Went To The Woods» contiene 30 tracks envueltos en atmósferas intrigantes y relacionadas con lo que significa para Varian vivir en el campo, en lo profundo del bosque. Aquí encontramos un mundo bizarro, coros fantasmales (“Amicus”) y también de ensueño (“The Queen of the Forest”), o bien sonidos de la naturaleza, fragmentos psicodélicos (“Twirled Hurtling Nights”), sampleos de arreglos sacados de diversos medios sonoros que evocan distintas emociones como la vergüenza, la nostalgia, la indiferencia, la ansiedad y la esperanza y que vienen a mostrar el viaje que hace Craig Varian hacia su interior.
Por ello ambas placas se sienten especialmente conmovedoras pues están impregnadas de momentos mágicos -a través del caleidoscopio sonoro de Craig Varian- para experimentar distintas emociones.
In 1988, Craig Varian and Jonathan McCall began to produce music and in 2002 they decided to work under the moniker ‘400 Lonely Things’. In 2020, McCall passed away, leaving Varian as the sole member of the project.
Varian describes 400 Lonely Things as ‘Dark New Age for the New Dark Age.’, whose compositions are based on layers of instrumental sound samples wrapped in loops and drones, along with murky melodies that create dense atmospheres close to dark ambient. Varian emphasizes recycling, and in this sense, the sampler plays a predominant role in composing the music.
The English label Cold Spring will release on 9 January 2026 two albums: ‘Creature Comforts’ and‘Why I Went To The Woods,’ each including two CDs. The press release states that ‘Creature Comforts’ is companion to ‘Why I Went To The Woods’, although in thematic terms they are not related, ‘are opposite sides of the same coin, which is why they are being released in tandem. The coin being, in this analogy, the 2024 National Election in the US…’ and its effects on the world’, and on Varian’s own emotions.
Both albums are accompanied by a booklet with paintings by David Irvine, who also created the cover art. Here we have the two albums, with around four hours of music.
‘Creature Comforts’ is associated with lullabies that have been very timely for Varian in these difficult times.
A nostalgic tone runs through the album with a collage of cinematic samples, such as the orchestrated session on ‘Once Upon a Time,’ among other songs. The dark times are palpable in tracks like ‘The Moth of Ending’, and in the self-titled track that also closes the album.
‘Why I Went To The Woods’ consist of 30 tracks that are shrouded in intriguing atmospheres related to what it means for Varian to live in the countryside, deep in the forest. Here we find a bizarre world, haunted choirs (‘Amicus’) and dreamlike ones (‘The Queen of the Forest’), as well as sounds of nature, psychedelic fragments (‘Twirled Hurtling Nights’), samples of arrangements taken from various sound media that evoke different emotions such as shame, nostalgia, indifference, anxiety and hope, showing Craig Varian’s journey into his inner self.
That is why both albums feel particularly poignant, as they are imbued with magical moments – through Craig Varian’s kaleidoscope of sound – to experience different emotions.
