Bird Battles
Bird Battles trae aire fresco que acaricia nuestros rostros con su peculiar mezcla de paisajes sonoros que envuelven con sus canciones de avant-pop. El falsete de la voz de Millar-McMeeken sugiere cierto dramatismo y atisbos al post-punk que son reforzados con la guitarra de Jesse Narens, en tanto la voz invitada de Vanessa Farinha, le da un carácter de pop experimental que pulula por atmósferas inquietantes.
Bird Battles está formado por Jesse Narens y Euan Alexander Millar-McMeeken. Narens está activo desde 2008 quien ha comisariado y participado en eventos eclécticos de arte y música. En 2010, se mudó al noroeste del Pacífico donde ha presentado su arte como pintura en directo, sesiones de arte abiertas para niños y comisariado en diversos lugares.
Euan Alexander Millar-McMeeken es un compositor y músico escocés afincado en el sur de Inglaterra, quien realiza un prolífico trabajo con varios proyectos a su haber. Como solista tiene el proyecto glacis (en línea con Roedelius & Arnold Kasar y Vetle Nærø) y The Dead Bell (junto a The Green Kingdom). También es miembro de la banda The Kays Lavelle y participa en el dúo Graveyard Tapes, Gallowglas y Civic Hall, entre otros proyectos. “Moth River” que abre el álbum emerge de un arrastrado ritmo y voces susurrantes, lo que continua en la canción que da título a este disco, apreciándose una aura brumosa y sintetizadores oscuros y ritmo somnoliento. En “Overgrown” se respira un ambiente cargado al post-punk que me transporta a los ’80 con Cassandra Complex, Eyeless In Gaza o Sisters Of Mercy.
En la medida que escucho el disco, canciones como “In A Tree” me sugieren un ambiente hipnótico -tan oportuno como necesario- con una percusión ralentizada.
“Act Of Distress” es una canción que se dibuja con una bella frase de piano y sutil línea sintetizada y emergentes punteos de guitarra. En “oVo” participa con letras y voz la artista y productora residente en Londres, Vanessa Farinha, quien con su voz a ritmo lento y fascinante, permea con su aura seductora que continua en “Prayer”. En “Hail” navega la delicada voz de Millar-McMeeken que se sumerge en la profundidad de “Listen To The Ground Breathe” creando una atmósfera inquietante. Finaliza el álbum con “Decay” en donde se despliegan soterrados riffs de guitarra que se cruzan con voces silentes de otro mundo.
Bird Battles se desplaza con elegancia en los contornos oscuros y al mismo tiempo bellos, con canciones emotivas que invitan a una atenta escucha.
Bird Battles brings a breath of fresh air that caresses our faces with its peculiar mix of soundscapes that envelop us with its avant-pop songs. Millar-McMeeken’s falsetto voice suggests a certain drama and hints of post-punk that are reinforced by Jesse Narens’ guitar, while Vanessa Farinha’s guest vocals give it an experimental pop character that swarms through eerie atmospheres.
Bird Battles is formed by Jesse Narens and Euan Alexander Millar-McMeeken. Narens has been active since 2008, curating and participating in eclectic art and music events. In 2010, he moved to the Pacific Northwest where he has presented his art as live painting, open art sessions for children and curated in various art places.
Euan Alexander Millar-McMeeken is a Scottish composer and musician based in the south of England, who has a prolific body of work with several projects to his name. As a solo artist, he has the project glacis (in line with Roedelius & Arnold Kasar and Vetle Nærø) and The Dead Bell (together with The Green Kingdom). He is also a member of the band The Kays Lavelle and participates in the duo Graveyard Tapes, Gallowglas and Civic Hall, among other projects. ‘Moth River,’ which opens the album, emerges from a slow rhythm and whispering voices, which continues in the song that gives the album its title, with a misty aura, dark synthesizers and a sleepy rhythm. ‘Overgrown’ has a post-punk atmosphere that transports me back to the 80s with Cassandra Complex, Eyeless In Gaza and Sisters Of Mercy.
As I listen to the album, songs like ‘In A Tree’ suggest a hypnotic atmosphere —as timely as it is necessary with slowed-down percussion. ‘Act Of Distress’ is a song that unfolds with a beautiful piano phrases, subtle synthesized lines and emerging guitar riffs. London-based artist and producer Vanessa Farinha contributes lyrics and vocals to ‘oVo,’ permeating the track with her slow, mesmerizing voice and seductive aura, which continues into ‘Prayer’. On ‘Hail,’ Millar-McMeeken’s delicate voice navigates the depths of ‘Listen To The Ground Breathe,’ creating an unsettling atmosphere. The album ends with ‘Decay,’ where underground guitar riffs intersect with silent, otherworldly voices.
Bird Battles moves elegantly through dark yet beautiful contours with emotive songs that invite to an attentive listening.
