Black Rain
Black Rain se formó en 1992 en la ciudad de Nueva York por los músicos Stuart Argabright en programación, teclados y diseño de sonido. Shinichi Shimokawa: programación y guitarra. Soren Roi: sintetizador modular y guitarra, Masashi Ohtsu en guitarras, sintetizador modular y Zanias en la voz. Como Invitado en «Black Mother Bardo», Otto Lindolm en contrabajo.
«Obliteration Bliss» -editado el 5 de diciembre 2025 por el sello australiano Room40- es el cuarto álbum de la banda, al que se suman varios EP’s, discos split (uno de ellos con el proyecto de techno oscuro, Shapednoise y Genesis P-Orridge), apariciones en compilados y álbumes compilatorios.
Originalmente “Obliteration Bliss” se lanzó en cassette por el sello inglés Downwards en 2023 y esta es una versión ampliada en CD vía Room40.
Para situarnos, aquí se combina un techno oscuro, ruidoso y atmosférico emparentado con lo que publica Hospital Productions, léase Vatican Shadow y Prurient, entre otros artistas. A los ritmos industriales junto a los repetitivos beats 4×4, se le agregan las turbias y somnolientas atmósferas, las guitarras y sintetizadores como en “All Snowflake Melt” que bordea la música cinemática. En “Signs Of Rain : Xenotime” con un beat sostenido se cruzan esquirlas de notas sintetizadas y la sugerente voz de Zanias. “Sacred Battlegrounds” se ve irrumpida por una voz alada y siniestra, en tanto en “Black Mother Bardo” la voz que viene de lo alto se entroniza en los cielos. “Atomisieren” muestra beats entrecortados y persistentes mientras se aprecian dos capas de sintes: Una que apenas se escucha y que va soterrada, y otra que se encuentra en la superficie con atisbos melódicos.
“Cave Of Ancients” que da termino al álbum, lo hace con una grabación de campo que captura el sonido del agua que fluye con rapidez por un río formando una capa de ruido constante hasta desaparecer. Un final inesperado, cercano al silencio donde el correr del agua es la ambientación sonora por excelencia.
Black Rain muestra varias facetas; desde el ruido granulado, el beat vibrante, pasando por panorámicas oscuras, coros angelicales y espacios aéreos.

‘Obliteration Bliss’—released on 5 December 2025 by the Australian label Room40—is the band’s fourth album, in addition to several EPs, split albums (one of them with the dark techno project Shapednoise and Genesis P-Orridge), appearances on compilations and compilation albums.
‘Obliteration Bliss’ was originally released on cassette by the English Downwards label in 2023, and this is an expanded CD version via Room40.
To set the scene, this album combines dark, noisy, atmospheric techno reminiscent of Hospital Productions releases, such as Vatican Shadow and Prurient, among other artists. Industrial rhythms and repetitive 4×4 beats are complemented by murky, sleepy atmospheres, guitars and synthesizers, as on ‘All Snowflake Melt,’ which borders on cinematic music. On ‘Signs Of Rain: Xenotime,’ a sustained beat intersects with fragments of synthesised notes and Zanias’ suggestive voice. ‘Sacred Battlegrounds’ is interrupted by a winged and sinister voice, while on ‘Black Mother Bardo,’ the voice that comes from above is enthroned in the heavens. ‘Atomisieren’ features staccato, persistent beats while two layers of synths can be heard: one that is barely audible and buried underground, and another that is on the surface with melodic glimpses.
‘Cave Of Ancients,’ which ends the album, does so with a field recording that captures the sound of water flowing rapidly down a river, forming a layer of constant noise until it disappears. An unexpected ending, close to silence, where the running of the water is the soundscape par excellence.
Black Rain displays various facets, from grainy noise and vibrant beats to dark panoramas, angelic choirs and airy spaces.
