Carolyn Fok
Carolyn Fok es una artista asiático-estadounidense, escritora, pionera de la música electrónica y diseñadora de sonido, cuya obra abarca más de cinco décadas cuando comenzó a experimentar con una grabadora multipista y caja de ritmos que su padre le fabricó y también por su influencia de las bandas electrónicas Cabaret Voltaire y The Human League, lo que la ha llevado a tener una extensa discografía de más de 100 discos.
A mediados de los ’80 comenzó con su apodo CYRNAI sacando varios discos en solitario. Además tocó en bandas de San Francisco como A State Of Mind, Trial y Rhythm & Noise. En 1996, publicó su álbum “Transfiguration” en el que contribuye el guitarrista de vanguardia Elliot Sharp.
Hace pocos años comenzó a publicar discos bajo su propio nombre y también continua con su alias CYRNAI.
“Chrysalis”, su nuevo álbum editado por Memoir of Sound el 1° de agosto de 2025, consiste en doce piezas dedicadas a la creación del universo -fascinación especial de Fok- el nacimiento de la estrellas; la formación de los planetas; haciendo un paralelo con el milagro de cómo se concibe el ser humano.

Carolyn Fok is an Asian-American artist, writer, electronic music pioneer, and sound designer whose work spans more than five decades. She began experimenting with a multitrack recorder and drum machine that her father built for her, and was also influenced by the electronic bands Cabaret Voltaire and The Human League, leading her to produce an extensive discography of more than 100 albums.
In the mid-1980s, she began using the moniker CYRNAI, releasing several solo albums. She also played in San Francisco bands such as A State Of Mind, Trial, and Rhythm & Noise. In 1996, she released her album ‘Transfiguration,’ featuring contributions from avant-garde guitarist Elliot Sharp.
A few years back, she began releasing albums under her own name and also continues with her alias CYRNAI.
‘Chrysalis,’ her new album released by Memoir of Sound on August 1, 2025, consists of twelve pieces dedicated to the creation of the universe—a special Fok’s fascination—the birth of stars; the formation of planets; drawing a parallel with the miracle of how human beings are conceived.
‘Chrysalis’ suggests an ethereal soundscape, with an expansive character that knows no bounds; ambient keyboards spread their wings to travel beyond, while subtle rhythms emerge from breaks; arpeggios that seem like reflections of shining objects; the immensity of space is so vast that it is overwhelming; the embryo manifests itself in its mystery and a human being is born.
With a wave of grandiloquent ambient canvases, Carolyn Fok’s music evokes the sublime moments of creation, while suggesting an immersive journey into introspection.
