Illusion Of Safety
Con más de 40 años de trayectoria, el improvisador, compositor e intérprete Daniel James Burke, afincado en Chicago Dan Burke, alias Illusion Of Safety y Twilight Furniture, ha desarrollado propuestas musicales que han abarcado todo el espectro de música de vanguardia, a saber, los inicios del pop industrial, el arte sonoro, el minimalismo y la música electrónica.
Ha publicado más de 40 discos en importantes sellos como Die Stadt, Experimedia, Odd Size, Silent, Soleilmoon, Staalplaat, Tesco, Waystyx y su propio Complacency Production. En tanto, ha colaborado componiendo, actuando en directo o en grabaciones con renombrados artistas como Jim O’Rourke, Darin Gray, Kevin Drumm, Jeb Bishop, Jon Mueller y Olivia Block, entre otros muchos. Así también ha trabajado con los grupos Cheer-Accident, Tertium Quid (con Bill Horist y Dave Abramson) y Total Sound (con Chris Block).
Su más reciente lanzamiento es «RVE -Robol Verification Exercise- (2025 Remaster)» que originalmente se publicó en 1991 por el sello Complacency. Se trata de una nueva remasterización del disco que estamos reseñando y que edita el sello Tribe Tapes. Robol fue el mítico estudio (ficticio) –de ahí el nombre- que se dio a conocer luego que The Hafler Trio (originalmente un dúo formado a principios de los años 80 por Andrew McKenzie y Chris Watson -Cabaret Voltaire-) lo utilizara para sus incursiones experimentales. Es por ello que “RVE” es un homenaje a The Hafler Trio,
En este álbum remasterizado Dan Burke toca junto a dos renombrados músicos de la vanguardia: el compositor y productor afincado en Tokio, Jim O’Rourke y Thymme Jones; músico y multiinstrumentista, afincado en Chicago. Este es el trío original que conformaba Illusion Of Safety, hoy sólo es el proyecto de Dan Burke.
Dos largas pistas conforman este disco que comienza por “RVE A”; drones de largo desarrollo que se va intercalando entre ruidos sintetizados, lo que hace que el ambiente sea cinematográfico con sintetizadores deslizantes e hipnóticos, ecos embrujados y sorpresivamente nos encontramos nos encontramos con potentes riffs de guitarra con sesgo metalero. A poco andar se sumerge y el sonido permanece subterráneo para luego emerger en una marea somnolienta y pesadillesca. Los choques electrizantes vuelven a aparecer hasta que se disuelven y se apagan.
“RVE B”, desde el silencio comienza a urdir una madeja de chasquidos de sampleos que evocan a The Hafler Trio como esos segmentos orquestales que se enganchan en un loop que contiene serpenteantes distorsiones de la guitarra que chocan con fuerza a través del feedback.
«RVE (2025 Remaster)» es un disco absolutamente vigente al día de hoy, con esa amalgama de collage de ruidos tomados de las bandas sonoras, las grabaciones de campo, transformando todo ello a través de la manipulación de sonidos, en una narrativa abstracta y oscura.

Burke’s latest release is ‘RVE -Robol Verification Exercise- (2025 Remaster)’, originally released in 1991 by the Complacency label. This is a new remastering of the album I’m reviewing, released on Tribe Tapes label. Robol was the legendary (fictional) studio —hence the name— that became known after The Hafler Trio (originally a duo formed in the early 1980s by Andrew McKenzie and Chris Watson—Cabaret Voltaire) used it for their experimental ventures. That is why ‘RVE’ is a tribute to The Hafler Trio.
On this remastered album, Dan Burke plays alongside two renowned avant-garde musicians: Tokyo-based composer and producer Jim O’Rourke and Chicago-based musician and multi-instrumentalist Thymme Jones. This is the original trio that made up Illusion Of Safety, now Dan Burke’s project.
Two long-form tracks make up this album, which begins with ‘RVE A’; extended drones interspersed with synthesized noises, creating a cinematic atmosphere with gliding and hypnotic synths and haunted echoes. Surprisingly, we find ourselves listening to powerful guitar riffs with a metal slant. Soon after, it submerges and the sound remains underground, only to emerge in a sleepy, nightmarish tide. The electrifying clashes reappear until they dissolve and fade away.
‘RVE B’ begins in silence, weaving together a tangle of sample clicks reminiscent of The Hafler Trio, like the orchestral segments caught in a loop containing snaking guitar distortions that crash forcefully through the feedback.
‘RVE (2025 Remaster)’ is an album that remains absolutely relevant today, with its amalgam of collages of noises taken from soundtracks and field recordings, transforming all of this through the manipulation of sounds into an abstract and dark narrative.
