Gwenan Spearing es una reconocida DJ de techno que pincha en prestigiosos clubes como Garbicz, Freerotation, Waking Life y a quien también se le conoce por sus improvisaciones en directo con Eli Verveine como Gin & Tonic.
Hace pocos años viene explorando nuevos territorios bajo el alias en solitario de phase space, editando el 11 de julio de este año, en su sello phase space, “Degrees of Freedom”, un álbum debut que comprende música electrónica generativa, los sistemas modulares y respuesta en tiempo real.
Spearing se traslada de Gales a Berlín donde es residente en la sala MaHalla, junto a ISH y Eli Verveine, quienes participan y son curadoras de la serie de música ambiental conocida como Aether; experiencia audiovisual inmersiva de 12 horas de duración.
Gwenan Spearing improvisa con sus propios parches que cambia constantemente, mientras los algoritmos crean distintas capas de ritmos y texturas. La apertura con “Sync” muestra sus palpitantes ritmos, al tiempo que las líneas sintetizadas comienzan a desenvolverse con soltura, donde la trama melódica hace guiños a Boards Of Canada y a Aphex Twin.
El video de “Sync” muestra el proceso de creación del arte de portada del álbum, a través de complejos sistemas electrónicos, activándose un plotter que traduce las ideas musicales en partituras gráficas. En tanto, Spearing despliega un trabajo más abstracto, junto a arpegios melancólicos y percusiones de tambores de metal orientales.
“Generator II” -que cierra “Degrees of Freedom”– exhibe un diálogo de pocas notas que deja entrever varias capas de sonidos que bien podrían constituirse en material a desarrollar para varias canciones.
Este último track tiene una fuerte carga emocional que conmueve por la delicadeza y cadencia de sus acordes, en la que Gwenan Spearing flota con holgura en un ambiente acogedor.

In recent years, she has been exploring new territories under the solo alias phase space, releasing her debut album ‘Degrees of Freedom’ on July 11 this year on her own label phase space, which features generative electronic music, modular systems, and real-time response.
Spearing moved from Wales to Berlin, where she is a resident at the MaHalla venue, alongside ISH and Eli Verveine, who participate in and curate the ambient music series known as Aether, a 12-hour immersive audiovisual experience.
Gwenan Spearing improvises with her own constantly changing patches, while algorithms create different layers of rhythms and textures. The opening track, ‘Sync,’ showcases her pulsating rhythms, while synthesized lines begin to unfold with ease, and the melodic textures nodding to Boards Of Canada and Aphex Twin.
The video for ‘Sync‘ shows the process of creating the album cover art through complex electronic systems, activating a plotter that translates musical ideas into graphic scores. Whereas Spearing displays a more abstract work, along with melancholic arpeggios and oriental steel drum percussion.
‘Generator II’—which closes ‘Degrees of Freedom’—features a dialogue of few notes, but reveals several layers of sounds that could well be developed into material for several songs.
The last track has a strong emotional charge that moves the listener with the delicacy and cadence of its chords, in which Gwenan Spearing floats comfortably in a cozy atmosphere.
