The Necks

39 años de historia musical tiene el trío australiano The Necks formado en 1987 por Chris Abrahams (piano y órgano Hammond), Tony Buck (batería, percusión y guitarra eléctrica) y Lloyd Swanton (bajo y contrabajo). Quienes se caracterizan por crear canciones de largo desarrollo con una fuerte dosis de minimalismo, a través de extensos segmentos de improvisación y repetición de paisajes sonoros.

“Disquiet” –editado el 10 de octubre 2025 por el sello de Brooklyn, New York, Northern Spy Records- consiste en cuatro largas canciones y se convierte en el vigésimo álbum de estudio que se publica en tres CD’s.
Apertura este triple disco “Rapid Eye Movement”, una pieza de algo más de 57 minutos que bien podría considerarse un álbum en sí mismo. Las notas dispersas del piano están acompañadas por un hipnótico manto de órgano, mientras que el bajo se contorsiona con breves acordes junto con los platillos que flotan en el espacio. El ambiente es calmo aunque un tanto intrigante pues hacia la mitad de la canción, el tono y el ritmo comienzan a tomar más fuerza.

En “Ghost Net”, la batería se desparrama en forma aleatoria, con incluso algunos ritmos a destiempo, en tanto el órgano se despliega con soltura, con acercamiento al jazz y una línea argumental de improvisación.

“Causeway” muestra bellas guitarras cristalinas con delays que moldean el entorno melódico de esta canción, acompañado de frases de piano tan frágiles como conmovedoras, comenzando el in crescendo a los 14 minutos de esta canción, con un diálogo vibrante entre el piano y el órgano. Cierra este triple disco, “Warm Running Sunlight” que tiene un talante más improvisado que las demás canciones, con un piano sigiloso y un contrabajo en pizzicato para un sonido percusivo que armoniza los delicados golpes a la batería.

The Necks con el lanzamiento de “Disquiet” nos entrega tres discos en los que dan rienda suelta tanto a la composición como a la improvisación; no habiendo límites demarcados, sino que fluyen con naturalidad cuando los tres miembros -dado los años de experiencia- intervienen con sus instrumentos con una libertad creativa desbordante.

The Australian trio The Necks, formed in 1987 by Chris Abrahams (piano and Hammond organ), Tony Buck (drums, percussion and electric guitar) and Lloyd Swanton (bass and double bass), has 39 years of musical history. They are known for creating long, developed songs with a strong dose of minimalism, through extensive segments of improvisation and repetition of soundscapes.

‘Disquiet,’ released on 10 October 2025 by Brooklyn, New York-based label Northern Spy Records, consists of four long songs and is the band’s 20th studio album, released on three CDs.
The triple album opens with ‘Rapid Eye Movement,’ a piece lasting just over 57 minutes that could easily be considered an album in itself. Scattered piano notes are accompanied by a hypnotic blanket of organ, while the bass contorts with brief chords along with the cymbals that drift across the space. The atmosphere is calm yet somewhat intriguing, as halfway through the song, the tone and rhythm begin to gain strength.

On ‘Ghost Net’, the drums are scattered randomly, with even some off-beat rhythms, while the organ unfolds with ease, approaching jazz and an improvisational storyline.

‘Causeway’ features beautiful crystalline guitars with delays that shape the melodic environment of this song, accompanied by piano phrases that are as fragile as they are poignant, beginning the in-crescendo 14 minutes into the song with a vibrant dialogue between the piano and the organ. Closing this triple album is ‘Warm Running Sunlight,’ which has a more improvized feel than the other songs, with a stealthy piano and a pizzicato double bass for a percussive sound that harmonizes with the delicate drum beats.

With the release of ‘Disquiet’, The Necks deliver three albums in which they give free rein to both composition and improvisation; there are no defined limits, but rather a natural flow when the three members – given their years of experience – play their instruments with boundless creative freedom.
