El sello de culto alemán Drone Records, fundado en Bremen en 1993, lanzó tres álbumes como parte de su serie SYM (Música Sinestésica): SYM 09 de irr.app.(ext.) (Hymns to the Extrusiarch), SYM 10 de Voice Of Eye / Soriah / Thomas Dimuzio (Aphelion) y SYM 11 de Modelbau (Muster).
En esta oportunidad, reseño el trabajo de Matt Waldron, la mente detrás de irr.app.(ext.). Afincado en la zona de San Francisco, Waldron opera desde los años noventa bajo este seudónimo, bajo el cual ha construido una vasta discografía que incluye docenas de álbumes de estudio, suites conceptuales, cajas audiovisuales y diversos proyectos colaborativos. Entre estos últimos destacan sus trabajos junto a los pioneros Nurse With Wound, materializados en el álbum «Angry Electric Finger» (2004), que contó además con la participación de Cyclobe y Jim O’Rourke. Si bien su sonido comparte ciertos vínculos con la música industrial, su propuesta se sitúa firmemente en los terrenos de la música concreta y la vanguardia.
Dentro de la mitología de irr.app.(ext.), el Extrusiarca se define por una naturaleza fría y mecánica: una entidad burocrática y liminal del cosmos cuyo propósito es obligar a lo abstracto a cruzar el umbral hacia el plano físico, transformándolo en materia concreta (o extruida).
Lo conceptual también se traslada a su propuesta visual. Sus piezas gráficas fusionan fragmentos de grabados antiguos, diagramas médicos y partes del cuerpo humano —como ojos, lenguas y huesos— con engranajes, maquinaria abstracta y figuras antropomórficas; una iconografía fuertemente influenciada por un surrealismo clásico que se manifiesta de igual forma en la atmósfera de su música.
El álbum “Hymns to the Extrusiarch” —editado en junio de 2026 por Drone Records— contiene dos largos temas de aproximadamente 27 minutos (divididos en 5 partes). La obra es un collage de sonidos orgánicos, similares a partes del cuerpo que mantienen un diálogo abstracto y convulso; a esto se suman ruidos sintéticos, tanto oscilantes como entrecortados, junto a voces fantasmagóricas a lo lejos. Todos estos retazos sonoros se transforman lentamente, revelando nuevas texturas en su desarrollo. Hacia el final, un drone profundo sirve de trasfondo para un encuentro con un mundo deshabitado y de silencio espectral.

For this review, I am focusing on the work of Matt Waldron, the creative force behind irr.app.(ext.). Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Waldron has been active under this moniker since the 1990s, building a vast discography that spans dozens of studio albums, conceptual suites, audiovisual box sets, and collaborative projects. Notably, his work with avant-garde pioneers Nurse With Wound resulted in the 2004 album Angry Electric Finger, which also featured Jim O’Rourke and Cyclobe. While Waldron’s sound shares some affinities with industrial music, his approach remains firmly rooted in musique concrète and the avant-garde.
Within the mythology of irr.app.(ext.), the Extrusiarch is defined as a cold, mechanical entity—a bureaucratic, liminal cosmic force whose purpose is to compel the abstract across the threshold into the physical plane, transforming it into concrete (or extruded) matter.
This conceptual framework is mirrored in Waldron’s visual style. His graphic art blends fragments of vintage engravings, medical diagrams, and anatomical elements—such as eyes, tongues, and bones—with cogs, abstract machinery, and anthropomorphic figures. This iconography, heavily influenced by classical surrealism, perfectly complements the dark, atmospheric landscapes of his music.
Released by Drone Records in June 2026, ‘Hymns to the Extrusiarch’ comprises two expansive tracks totaling approximately 27 minutes and spanning five distinct parts. The album operates as a collage of organic sounds, evoking anatomical elements locked in an abstract, turbulent dialogue. This visceral core is punctuated by oscillating, staccato synthetic noise and the faint echo of ghostly voices. As these sonic fragments slowly mutate, they unveil shifting textures that redefine the landscape. Toward the climax, a profound drone anchors the piece, leaving the listener stranded in an uninhabited world of spectral silence.
