Katharina Ernst
Katharina Ernst es una baterista, compositora y pintora austríaca-malaya, quien comienza a tocar la batería a los nueve años. Estudió en la Academia de Bellas Artes de Viena y es graduada en Bellas Artes y Pintura, abarcando en su trabajo la música, pintura, danza y performance.
Después de varios discos a su haber, lanza el 12 de septiembre 2025 por su sello Extrametric, su nuevo álbum “Extrametric II”, que viene a ser la continuación de “Extrametric” (Ventil Records, 2018), un disco polirítmico y paisajes electrónicos abstractos. También hace dúo junto al guitarrista y cineasta alemán, Martin Siewert como ALSO, un proyecto de improvisación y ruido.
“Extrametric II” consiste en siete pistas donde Ernst está a cargo de la composición, letra, batería, sintetizador de batería, voz, kalimba amplificada, pedales de efectos, percusión, gongs, shakers y amplificador de bajo. Todos los instrumentos se tocan en vivo.
En relación a la polirítmica, Ernst hace una interesante declaración: “los poliritmos son una cuestión política, ya que pueden coexistir múltiples ritmos sin que ninguno de ellos sea superior”. Por cierto que así se relevan los valores democráticos de la equidad.
“Extrametric” también comprende siete temas del «x_01 al x_07». Así, “Extrametric II” abre con “x_08” que registra un beat pulsante que hace guiño al techno, con un ritmo constante y repetitivo, ciertamente hipnótico. “x_09” con sus aleatorios golpes a la batería, se acompaña de finas texturas electrónicas que dibujan un halo de nostalgia. En “x_10” se configura como una estructura canción, donde Ernst canta y se acompaña de baterías sintetizadas, todo ello con acercamientos al post-rock. En “x_11” los gongs y shakers se despliegan creando una capa que planea sobre la superficie, en tanto que “x_12” muestra un beat pulsante y persistente, mientras que en “x_13” la kalimba expone bellas notas pasadas por efectos, creando un cedazo ambiental. “x_14” que cierra este álbum, lo hace con un bpm constante que comienza a aumentar rápidamente al ritmo del hard-techno.
Katharina Ernst trabaja una amplia gama de percusión que es enriquecida a través de los distintos tempos percusivos que coexisten a la vez y los efectos y manipulación de los sonidos originales, creando así nuevos matices sonoros que configuran atmósferas espectrales e inquietantes que recorren todo el álbum.
Katharina Ernst is an Austrian-Malaysian drummer, composer, and painter who began playing the drums at the age of nine. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and holds a degree in Fine Arts and Painting, encompassing music, painting, dance, and performance in her work.
After several albums to her credit, she released her new album ‘Extrametric II’ on September 12, 2025, on her label Extrametric, which is the sequel to ‘Extrametric’ (Ventil Records, 2018), a polyrhythmic album featuring abstract electronic landscapes. She also performs as a duo with German guitarist and filmmaker Martin Siewert as ALSO, an improvisation and noise project.
‘Extrametric II’ consists of seven tracks on which Ernst is responsible for composition, lyrics, drums, drum synthesizer, vocals, amplified kalimba, effects pedals, percussion, gongs, shakers, and bass amplifier. All instruments are played live.
Regarding polyrhythms, Ernst makes an interesting statement: «polyrhythms are an interesting political issue, since multiple rhythms can coexist without any of them being superior.» This certainly highlights the democratic values of equality.
‘Extrametric’ also includes seven tracks, from ‘x_01’ to ‘x_07,’ so ‘Extrametric II’ opens with ‘x_08’, which features a throbbing beat reminiscent of techno, with a constant, repetitive rhythm that is truly hypnotic. ‘x_09,’ with its off-kilter drum beats, is accompanied by fine electronic textures that create a halo of nostalgia. ‘x_10’ is structured like a song, with Ernst singing and accompanied by synthesized drums, all with post-rock influences. In ‘x_11,’ gongs and shakers unfold, creating layers that hover above the surface, while ‘x_12’ features a pulsating and persistent beat. On ‘x_13,’ the kalimba exposes beautiful notes passed through effects, creating an ambient sieve. ‘x_14’ closes the album with a steady bpm that begins to increase rapidly to the rhythm of hard techno.
Katharina Ernst works with a wide range of percussion that is enriched through the different percussive tempos that coexist at the same time, plus effects and manipulation of the original sounds, thus creating new sonic nuances that shape the spectral and eerie atmosphere that run throughout the album.
