My Cat Is An Alien | Interview
Los hermanos Maurizio y Roperto Opalio forman My Cat Is An Alien, en Torino, Italia, a finales de 1997, banda referente en la escena underground a nivel mundial, desplegando distintos estilos como psicodelia, drone, folk y desde entonces poseen una larga discografía de más de 25 discos editados en connotados sellos independientes como Opax, Trensmat Records, Atavistic, Blackest Rainbow, Lost Treasures Of The Underworld, Silentes / Seven Solar Metals, Ecstatic Peace.
Despliegan su música a través de la improvisación en la experimentan sonidos con sus guitarras, eléctricas y acústicas, instrumentos de cuerda hechos por ellos mismos, diversos instrumentos de juguete (los llamados ‘juguetes del espacio’), electrónica modificada (‘alientronics’) y un amplio set de percusión. Además, Roberto Opalio utiliza su propia voz como “instrumento” realizando vocalizaciones que son procesadas electrónicamente.
MCIAA trabajan además en películas, vídeos, instalaciones audiovisuales, poesía, dibujo, fotografía y pintura.
Han trabajado con reconocidos artistas como Thurston Moore, Jim O’Rourke, Christina Carter, Okkyung Lee, Christian Marclay, Glands Of External Secretion, Fabio Orsi, Ramona Ponzini, Mats Gustafsson, entre otros.
Recientemente el sello canadiense Elliptical Noise Records editó ‘Psycho-System’, una caja de seis CD’s.
¿Ustedes combinan la música con otras disciplinas artísticas?
«La esencia de My Cat Is An Alien es siempre estrictamente correlativa con todas las disciplinas artísticas. Esto lo hemos estado haciendo desde el primer momento de nuestra aventura. Pintura, fotografía, poesía, video arte, instalaciones: está todo ahí».
¿En qué se inspiraron para hacer ‘Alien, All Too Alien’?
«Nos gusta dar a todos nuestros trabajos muchas, muchas capas de significado. Comenzando por el propio título, tu puedes descubrir una capa después de la otra y luego otra capa. ‘Alien, All Too Alien’ es una ‘distorsión’ del título de una de las piezas maestras de Friederich Nietzsche ‘Humano, demasiado humano.
Simplemente transferimos a nuestra propia filosofía mito-alienígena cosmogónica. Para nosotros el significado básico viene de ver la ineludible degradación imparable de la raza humana y su rápida auto-aniquilación. No podemos aceptar que nos veamos afectados por esta generalizada, extrema ignorancia, ceguera y pérdida de cualquier tipo de sentido existencial, que caracteriza a nuestra época histórica que la hemos renombrado ‘Nueva Edad Media’, en nuestro trabajo ‘What Space Is Made For'».
¿En qué sonidos están interesados experimentar en estos días?
«Estamos llevando todos nuestros sonidos al extremo. En nuestro último trabajo, una caja de seis CD’s titulada ‘PSYCHO -SYSTEM’ (lanzado en noviembre de 2013 por el sello canadiense Elliptical Noise), hemos querido describir varios estados de una mente psicótica, como alucinación, bipolaridad, delirio, catatonia, etc., a través de largas composiciones instantáneas, cada una desarrollada para la duración completa de un disco. Musicalmente hablando, esto representa un nuevo paso de MCIAA en términos de una radical improvisación orgánica».
¿Los instrumentos hechos por ustedes mismos producen sonidos que ningún otro instrumento tradicional entrega?
«Sí, todos los instrumentos que construimos nosotros son concebidos para crear sonidos que nunca se han escuchado antes y por lo tanto pueden ser escuchados sólo en los discos de My Cat Is An Alien. Definitivamente no tenemos interés en los sonidos que ya existen».
¿Nos podrían contar sobre vuestros próximos pasos?
«Es muy triste en este mundo todo lo que parece haberse convertido la música. Frente a esto, siguiendo el camino iluminado por John Cage, My Cat Is An Alien finalizará la misión de llegar a la destrucción total de toda la música a como tú la conoces».
Brothers Maurizio and Roperto Opalio formed My Cat Is An Alien, in Torino, Italy, in late 1997, a band referent in the worldwide underground scene, displaying different styles like psychedelic, drone, folk. Since they started they have a discography of over 25 albums released on independent labels such as OPAX, Trensmat Records, Atavistic, Blackest Rainbow, Lost Treasures Of The Underworld, Silentes / Seven Solar Metals, Ecstatic Peace.
They display their music through improvisation experimenting sounds with their electric and acoustic guitars, homemade stringed instruments, several toy instruments (so-called ‘space toys’), modified electronics (‘alientronics’) and a wide range of percussion. Also, Roberto Opalio use his own voice as a ‘tool’ making vocalizations that are electronically processed.
MCIAA also work in film, video, audiovisual installations, poetry, drawing, photography and painting.
They have worked with renowned artists such as Thurston Moore, Jim O’Rourke, Christina Carter, Okkyung Lee, Christian Marclay, Glands Of External Secretion, Fabio Orsi, Ramona Ponzini, Mats Gustafsson, among others.
Recently the Canadian label Elliptical Noise Records released ‘Psycho-System’, a six CD set of new recordings produced on homemade and toy instruments.
Do you combine music with other artistic disciplines?
‘The essence of My Cat Is An Alien is always strictly correlated with all artistic disciplines. We have been doing this since the very beginning of our adventure. Painting, photography, poetry, video art, installations: it’s all there.’
What inspired you to make “Alien, All Too Alien” [Trensmat Records, 2013)?
«We like to give all our works many, many layers of meaning. Starting with the title itself, you can discover one layer after another and then another layer. “Alien, All Too Alien” is a ‘distortion’ of the title of one of Friederich Nietzsche’s masterpieces, ‘Human, All Too Human’.
We simply transferred it to our own mythical-alien cosmogonic philosophy. For us, the basic meaning comes from seeing the inescapable, unstoppable degradation of the human race and its rapid self-annihilation. We cannot accept that we are affected by this widespread, extreme ignorance, blindness and loss of any kind of existential meaning that characterises our historical era, which we have renamed “New Middle Ages” in our work “What Space Is Made For”.
What sounds are you interested in experimenting with these days?
«We are taking all our sounds to the extreme. In our latest work, a six-CD box set entitled ‘PSYCHO -SYSTEM’ (released in November 2013 by the Canadian label Elliptical Noise), we wanted to describe various states of a psychotic mind, such as hallucination, bipolarity, delirium, catatonia, etc., through long instantaneous compositions, each developed for the entire duration of an album. Musically speaking, this represents a new step for MCIAA in terms of radical organic improvisation.»
Do the instruments you make yourselves produce sounds that no other traditional instrument can deliver?
«Yes, all the instruments we build are designed to create sounds that have never been heard before and can therefore only be heard on My Cat Is An Alien records. We definitely have no interest in sounds that already exist.»
Could you tell us about your next steps?
It is very sad what music seems to have become in this world. In the face of this, following the path illuminated by John Cage, My Cat Is An Alien will complete the mission of bringing about the total destruction of all music as you know it.
