Open to the Sea

Having learnt that the members of Open to the Sea —Enrico Coniglio, Saverio Rosi, and Matteo Uggeri— are all deeply rooted in experimental music, ambient, and field recordings, I was naturally anticipating a sound art album. Instead, I discovered an immersive groove that flirts with ambient, dream pop, and jazz at various points throughout the record, all while maintaining a remarkably relaxed and accessible atmosphere.
‘Beyond the Emotional Flood’ was co-released on 16 September by the New York-based label Secret Lovers and Italy’s Silentes label, based in Vittorio Veneto. On this album, Coniglio plays guitar and guitar synthesizer, while Saverio Rosi handles the OP-1 and acoustic guitar. Meanwhile, Italian composer and visual designer Matteo Uggeri takes charge of the laptop, random percussion, and mixing duties.
The album flows through slowly unfolding tracks that exude absolute calm. This is beautifully exemplified in ‘When Are We Lost in Paris…’, a track built on languid, delayed guitars, subtle electronic pulses, ambient noises, and gently unfurling soundscapes. All of this is masterfully interwoven with a collection of private, intimate messages gathered by the three musicians during a period of profound personal change.
The album closes with ‘Towards the Mystical Bootstrap,’ a piece featuring dense layers of ambient sound that fade away beneath the raw, evocative subtitle ‘Erection by Words and Images.’ This final track brings the album’s fourth act to a poignant close with a slow, introspective fade-out.
