And Also The Trees – Live in Lyon 16/11/2024, Le Périscope
Por aquellas afortunadas coincidencias que nos deparan los viajes, nos encontramos en la ciudad de Lyon el día en que And Also The Trees (AATT) culmina su gira que testifica 40 años de trayectoria de esta banda inglesa formada en 1984 en la ciudad de Inkberrow, Worcestershire. El motivo de esta gira es promocionar su último trabajo titulado Mother-Of-Pearl Moon, su décimo sexto álbum de estudio, editado por su propio sello AATT.
Le Périscope es un pequeña sala de conciertos en esta ciudad francesa, con capacidad de 150 personas y administrada con una visión que hace que los tickets sean accesibles a precios razonables (15 euros en este caso); como era de esperar el concierto estaba completamente vendido.
Al entrar a la antesala nos encontramos con una nutrida tienda con todas sus últimas producciones y otros artículos coleccionables, de fondo suena Cop Killer de John Maus; la jornada promete.
Reconociendo que mi conocimiento de la banda se remonta a sus primeras producciones por Reflex y Normal Records (gracias una vez más al antiguo programa de radio Música Marginal y al fanzine del mismo nombre), los 21 temas que la banda interpretó sólidamente esa noche se guardan fervientemente en nuestra historia y experiencia.
AATT está en lo suyo, con músicos de trayectoria, liderados por los hermanos Simon Huw (letras y voces) y Justin Jones (guitarras, teclados), junto a Paul Hill (preciso baterista), Grant Gordon (bajo) y Colin Ozanne (clarinete, teclados y órgano), al final un lujo de agrupación que entrega todo en directo, pueden equivocarse y empezar nuevamente un tema, no hay necesidad de disculpas, son los ATTT.
Se percibe la comodidad de la banda, el gusto del público, que en temas como Shantell (de sus primeros años), Dialogue (The Klaxon), Slow Pulse Boy (Virus Meadow) y Brother Fear (Angelfish) vibra sentidamente. Los nuevos temas son de impecable factura, Simon Huw abre un libro y recita bajo la interpretación inspirada de la banda, todo fluye y termina emocionando.
Su última entrega puede asociarse a un libro, donde cada tema es un relato, una vivencia, una experiencia diferente, en que la elegante música es el telón para la lírica y relato de la agrupación, con referencias musicales italianas, baladas inspiradas, viajes por la campiña, folk psicodélico rural y paisajes musicales. La propuesta musical es original con múltiples referencias, temas como Valdrada evoca una de las ciudades invisibles de Italo Calvino, composiciones con cuerdas de mandolina reverberadas, melodías cadenciosas en una góndola imaginaria, como es This Path Through The Medow. AATT a través de su existencia ha ido construyendo sus diferentes perspectivas musicales, teniendo siempre presente que “realmente no tiene sentido escribir el mismo álbum una y otra vez”, como diría Simon Huw Jones, en una entrevista en 2023 a un medio español.
Después de dos aplaudidos bis, la banda se despide del público, baja del pequeño escenario, camina entre los asistentes, termina el encuentro en Lyon y su música sigue dando vueltas en cuerpo y alma.
En 1995, se publicó una entrevista con AATT en el fanzine chileno Música Marginal, que se publicará próximamente en Loop.
By those fortunate coincidences that travel brings, we find ourselves in the city of Lyon on the day that And Also The Trees (AATT) ends its tour that testifies to 40 years of career of this English band formed in 1984 in the town of Inkberrow, Worcestershire. The reason for this tour is to promote their latest work entitled Mother-Of-Pearl Moon, their sixteenth studio album, released by their own label AATT.
Le Périscope is a small concert hall in this French city, with a capacity of 150 people and managed with a vision that makes tickets accessible at reasonable prices (15 euros in this case); as expected the concert was completely sold out.
As we entered the hall we found a large shop with all their latest productions and other collectible merchandising, with Cop Killer by John Maus playing in the background; the day was promising.
Acknowledging that my knowledge of the band goes back to their early releases on Reflex and Normal Records (thanks once again to the former radio programme Música Marginal, and the zine under the same name), the 21 tracks the band solidly performed that night are fervently stored in our history and experience.
AATT are on their own, with musicians of experience, led by brothers Simon Huw (lyrics and vocals) and Justin Jones (guitars, keyboards), along with Paul Hill (precise drummer), Grant Gordon (bass) and Colin Ozanne (clarinet, keyboards and organ), in the end a luxury of a group that delivers everything live, they can make mistakes and start a song again, there is no need for apologies, they are ATTT.
You can feel the comfort of the band, the taste of the audience, who in songs like Shantell (from their early years), Dialogue (The Klaxon), Slow Pulse Boy (Virus Meadow) and Brother Fear (Angelfish) vibrate with feeling. The new tracks are impeccably crafted, Simon Huw opens a book and recites under the band’s inspired playing, everything flows and ends up moving.
Their latest release can be associated with a book, where each track is a story, an experience, a different experience, where the elegant music is the backdrop for the band’s lyrics and storytelling, with Italian musical references, inspired ballads, journeys through the countryside, rural psychedelic folk and musical landscapes. The musical proposal is original with multiple references, songs like Valdrada evokes one of Italo Calvino’s invisible cities, compositions with reverberated mandolin strings, cadenced melodies in an imaginary gondola, like This Path Through The Medow. Throughout its existence, AATT has been building its different musical perspectives, always keeping in mind that ‘it doesn’t really make sense to write the same album over and over again’, as Simon Huw Jones would say in an interview in 2023 to a Spanish media.
After two applauded encores, the band says goodbye to the audience, steps down from the small stage, walks among the audience, ends the meeting in Lyon, and their music still going round in body and soul.
