Crimson Butterfly
Crimson Butterfly es un dúo electrónico de N. Novgorod, Rusia, formado hace más de 10 años. Al escuchar su catálogo general, podrían considerarse como una banda más de música electrónica, atractiva, pero común; tales como los Giant Swan; sin embargo, esta producción de 2018 es una pieza muy interesante. Serge y Elle, conocidos como Crimsons, recopilaron diferentes piezas de presentaciones en vivo y material grabado en estudio. El resultado es una mezcla de sonidos industriales y psicodelia electrónica. En el circuito europeo, este dúo es considerado como una banda muy creativa, principalmente por su «variación estilística en performances en vivo, desde temas de techno, dance industrial crudos y múltiples capas de errores digitales hasta un drone ambient crudo y meditativo». Como la mayoría de estas nuevas bandas ya comercializan la totalidad de su material en internet, la discografía de Crimson Butterfly suele ser confusa y en algunos sitios web se puede encontrar material diferente y original, ya que no cuentan con sello ni catálogo oficial. De todos modos, este álbum está disponible en Bandcamp y Spotify; además en YouTube, también hay material muy interesante de sus presentaciones habituales en Berlín.
Para empezar esta reseña, el álbum «MMXVIII» arranca con el tema «Mycellum», una interesante introducción con un claro ejercicio de electrónica oscura, ajeno al típico ritmo de cuatro por cuatro del EDM, característico en la mayoría de los DJs. Otro tema interesante es «Max Dub 93.23», un sample muy reconocible de los Art of Noise, con un toque de ritmo Jungle-Reggae.
El tema de diecisiete minutos «Loli Doom Variations 3» es un trabajo notable y bien merece la pena el resto del álbum. Es una mezcla de sonidos industriales con un toque de los paisajes psicodélicos de «The Dark Side of the Moon”, que culmina en un acelerado paso por una pesadilla muy oscura. Hay otras versiones en internet con una mezcla de trompeta que evoca instantáneamente el estilo de Jon Hassel. ¡Un tema increíble! Los siguientes temas, «Alpha Lyrae» y «Varia», contienen dos versiones: electrónica e industrial. De más está decir que las versiones industriales son más atractivas y creativas que las otras.
Los últimos lanzamientos de Crimson Butterfly (2020 y 2021) se centran más en las pistas de baile que en propuestas netamente alternativas. Sin embargo, es interesante escuchar algunos temas y notar que su lado industrial es realmente su fuerte, ya que la mayoría de ellos se inclinan hacia sonidos alternativos y dark ambient. Como ya se mencionó al inicio, este dúo aún está desarrollando nuevo material y probablemente nos sorprenderán en un futuro con un álbum industrial más estructurado y riguroso, probablemente titulado «De Rusia con love».

Listening their general catalogue they could be considered an attractive but normal electronic band- such as the British Giant Swan, however this 2018 production is a very interesting piece. Serge and Elle, called the Crimsons, compiled different pieces from live presentations and some studio recorded material. The result is a mix of industrial and electronic psychedelia sounds. In the European circle this duo is considered a very creative band mainly for their ‘stylistic variation of gigs and releases from rough techno and industrial dance themes and multi-layered glitches to raw and meditative drone ambient.’ (Soundcloud, 2023)
As the majority of these new bands their material is completed commercialize on the web, therefore their discography is frequently messy and on some sites you may find different and original material because they don’t have an official label or an official catalogue either. Anyway, this album is available on Bandcamp and Spotify, besides on Youtube there are also some very interesting material from their usual presentations in Berlin.
Getting the ball rolling on this review, the album ‘MMXVIII’ starts with the track ‘Mycellum’ an interesting opening where there is a clear dark electronic exercise not associated with the common ‘four-on-the-floor beat’ of the EDM related to most of the DJs. Another interesting track is ‘Max Dub 93.23’ very recognizable sample form Art of Noise and kind of Jungle-Reggae rhythm.
The seventeen-minutes track ‘Loli Doom Variations 3’ is a remarkable work and it well worth the rest of the album. It’s a mix of Industrial sounds with some ‘Dark side of the Moon’s landscapes which ends in an accelerated walk in a very obscure nightmare- there are some other versions on the web with a trumpet mix which instantly evokes Jon Hassel’s style. Amazing track!
The following tracks ‘Alpha Lyrae’ and ‘Varia’ content two versions, the electronic ones and industrials. Needless to say the industrial versions are the most attractive and creative.
Crimson butterfly last releases – 2020 & 2021, are more focused on clubs than alternative approaches, however it’s interesting to listen to some tracks and notice that their industrial side is really their strengthens as most of tracks lead to alternative and dark ambient sounds. As previously mentioned, this duo is still developing new material and they will probably amaze us with a more structured and stricter industrial album with a title such as ‘From Russia with love.’
