Marta Salogni & Stefano Pilia
Marta Salogni, ingeniera de sonido, productora y artista de bucles afincada en Londres, es reconocida por su uso de grabadoras vintage de bobina a bobina Revox para generar retardos analógicos y loops. Por su parte, Stefano Pilia es un guitarrista, compositor electroacústico y multiinstrumentista italiano basado en Bolonia, cuya obra explora la resonancia de la guitarra y la repetición constante.
Con su álbum «Phren», la dupla busca abordar el sonido como un material vivo y cambiante, alejándose de la mera conservación estática del pasado. Publicado por Maple Death Records, este proyecto explora cómo la memoria, la repetición y la resonancia remodelan y transforman continuamente nuestras experiencias auditivas.
Este trabajo constituye el tercer lanzamiento de Opale, una serie comisariada por Maple Death y la editorial Canicola Edizioni. Ambas entidades invitaron a Salogni y Pilia a explorar el cruce entre la música experimental y la narrativa visual, un concepto que se plasma en seis canciones grabadas con un sofisticado procesamiento de filtros y magnetófonos Revox para crear un espacio de escucha, aislamiento y encuentro. El disco se complementa con un libro de ilustraciones diseñado por la reconocida artista visual italiana Sarah Mazzetti.
«Phren» nos sumerge en un mar de notas sintetizadas y sutilmente saturadas, donde la resonancia construye un entramado melódico de carácter ceremonial y profundamente emotivo, concebido para celebrar la vida y la muerte. London-based sound engineer, producer, and tape-loop artist Marta Salogni is renowned for manipulating vintage Revox reel-to-reel recorders to engineer rich analogue delays and tactile loops. Complementing her craft, Bologna-based guitarist and electroacoustic composer Stefano Pilia focuses his multi-instrumental practice on the physical resonance of the guitar and the structural power of repetition.
With their collaborative album ‘Phren,’ the duo approaches sound as a living, mutable organism rather than a static relic of the past. Released via Maple Death Records, the project investigates how memory, recurrence, and resonance continuously warp and reshape our auditory perceptions.
The album marks the third installment of Opale, an ongoing series curated by Maple Death and the publishing house Canicola Edizioni. Commissioned to explore the friction between experimental music and sequential art, Salogni and Pilia crafted six tracks using intricate filter processing and Revox tape decks. The resulting sonic landscape forms an immersive sanctuary for listening, isolation, and confrontation, fully integrated with an accompanying art book by acclaimed Italian visual artist Sarah Mazzetti.
‘Phren’ immerses the listener in an ocean of synthesized, subtly saturated textures, where shifting resonances weave a ceremonial and deeply evocative melodic tapestry designed to celebrate both life and mortality. Radiant ambient layers emit an ethereal glow that blends harmoniously with the angelic vocals on «and my river flows towards you, O sea, take me in»—culminating in a truly breathtaking finale.
