Michael Morley es un músico, cantante y compositor neozelandés más conocido como miembro de la banda de rock de vanguardia The Dead C y por sus exploraciones electrónicas en su alias como Gate.
Morley se inicia en la música a principios de los ’80 y cuenta con una discografía de al menos 60 discos, trabajando en solitario o en bandas como The Never Quartet, The Righteous Yeah, además de participar en los
grupos Sun Valley, The Fuck Chairs y colaborar junto a connotados artistas/grupos como My Cat Is An Alien, Ramona Ponzini, Lee Ranaldo y Bill Orcutt, entre otros.
En los últimos 10 años ha estado tocando la guitarra acústica, hilvanando un trabajo íntimo y solitario, alejado del rock alternativo y del underground del cual emerge.
El descubrimiento casual con discos de guitarra española y clásica de los años ‘50 y ’60 de compositores españoles, mexicanos y sudamericanos como De Fossa, Ponce, Lauro, Barrios, Pujol, Albéniz, Falla y Villa-Lobos, así como compositores de guitarra clásica más tradicionales como Schubert, Haydn y Scarlatti, ejerció una gran influencia en Morley para desarrollar su propio estilo: voz susurrante, cancina, con suaves acordes y melancólicas melodías. Una faceta nueva y muy distinta a los drones de guitarra de “Oceans Quarters” (2016), aunque el año anterior “The Burning House” (2015) ya comenzaba sus exploraciones en solitario con la guitarra acústica.
“Pushed Streets” publicado este mes por el sello Thin Wrist Recordings consiste en doce canciones en su mayoría de corta duración en las que Morley expresa sus sentimientos, sus anhelos y su conexión con el entorno natural que le rodea que es la Isla del Sur, Wai Pounamu en Nueva Zelanda.
El trabajo introspectivo e íntimo de Morley en este álbum sugieren al oyente viajar por una deriva meditativa.
Michael Morley is a New Zealand musician, singer and songwriter best known as a member of the avant-garde rock band The Dead C and for his electronic explorations under his alias Gate.
Morley started in music in the early ’80s and holds a discography of at least 60 albums, working as a solo artist, and in bands such as The Never Quartet, The Righteous Yeah, in addition to participate in the groups Sun Valley, The Fuck Chairs and collaborate with renowned artists/groups such as My Cat Is An Alien, Ramona Ponzini, Lee Ranaldo and Bill Orcutt, among others.
In the last 10 years he has been playing acoustic guitar, putting together an intimate and solitary work, far from the alternative and underground rock from which he emerges.
The chance discovery of Spanish and classical guitar records from the ’50s and ’60s by Spanish, Mexican and South American composers such as De Fossa, Ponce, Lauro, Barrios, Pujol, Albéniz, Falla and Villa-Lobos, as well as guitar composers and classical musicians such as Schubert, Haydn and Scarlatti, had a great influence on Morley to develop his own style: whispering voice, slow pace, soft chords and melancholic melodies. A new and a very different side in comparison to the guitar drones of “Oceans Quarters” (2016), although the prior year “The Burning House” (2015) he already began his solo acoustic guitar explorations.
“Pushed Streets,” released this month by Thin Wrist Recordings, consists of twelve mostly short songs in which Morley expresses his feelings, desires and his connection with the natural environment, which is Te Wai Pounamu, South Island, New Zealand.
Morley’s introspective and intimate work on this album suggests the listener travel through a meditative drift.
