**Phillip Sollmann, “Something Is Missing”, Dial, 2006**
Phillip Sollmann es una artista alemán de la ciudad de Kassel y que después de vivir en Hamburgo, Viena, desde este año lo hace en la ciudad de Berlín. En Viena estudia Música por Computador, oportunidad en que después de conocer el procesamiento digital en tiempo-real a través del software musical, su interés se centra en el trabajo de La Monte Young, Phil Niblock y Charlemagne Palestine.
Desde 1998 y con el seudónimo de Tobin junto a Tobin Alexander Polzin y Efdemin graba algunos discos en las vertientes minimal techno y experimental para Kompakt y Dial. Con su disco “Something Is Missing” explora el minimalismo y los drones creando ambientes hipnóticos pero por sobre todo envolviendo todo el espacio con las resonancias de las notas sostenidas. Los temas de este disco hacen referencia precisamente a esta idea del espacio en un lugar determinado, de ahí el título de los temas, donde “Room one” es una presentación en vivo en el estudio Elak de Viena en 2004, en el que pequeñas notas se traslapan una a otras formando bellas armonías.
“Room two”, también es un concierto vivo que se realiza en Grüntal, Berlín en septiembre 2005. En este tema se aprecia un drone sobre el que se van produciendo ondas sinoudales. “Room three” y “Room four” fueron grabados en Neue-Welt en Viena en octubre 2004. En este último, el fondo es un ruido soterrado y que sobre él, se asoman algunas notas que parecen pequeñas gotas imperceptibles.
En tanto el tercer corte, Sollman juega con la estática y los cambios de voltaje. “Room five”, el último tema, también registrado en Neue-Welt en Viena, en junio 2004 para la instalación “Windzimmer”, es una viaje de drones que es acompañado por la voz de Sollmann que cubre con un manto de delicadeza y calma y que desaparece en el silencio. Phillip Sollmann is a German artist from Kassel who after living in Hamburg and Vienna, this year based his residency in Berlin. In Vienna he studied Computer Music, and after learning digital processing in real-time through musical software, he become interested and focused in the work of La Monte Young, Phil Niblock and Charlemagne Palestine, among others artists.
Since 1998 and under the monikers of Tobin along with Tobin Alexander Polzin and Efdemin he releases some albums in the slope of minimal techno and experimental music for Kompakt and Dial labels. With his album ‘Something Is Missing’ he explores minimalism and drones creating hypnotic ambient but more over by surrounding all the space with resonances of sustained notes. The tracks of this disc really make reference to this idea of space in a determined place, and from this come the title of these cuts, where ‘Room one’ is a live performance held at the Elak studio in Vienna in 2004, in which small notes overlap one to others shaping beautiful harmonies.
‘Room two’, also is a live set held in Grüntal, Berlin in September 2005. In this track is appraised a drone and on top of it sine waves are taken place. ‘Room three’ and ‘Room four’ were recorded in Neue-Welt, Vienna in October 2004. In this last one, there’s a backdrop of buried noise and over it some notes appear that seem like small imperceptible drops.
While in the third cut, Sollman plays with static and humming. ‘Room five’, the last track, also recorded in Neue-Welt, Vienna, June 2004, for the ‘Windzimmer’ installation, is a trip full of drones that is accompanied by Sollmann’s voice that covers the whole space with a mantle of gentleness and calm and that in a sudden disappears in silence. Silence like sonorous space.
