Psychic TV
Psychic TV (PTV) se formó en Inglaterra en 1981 luego de la separación de la banda ícono de la música industrial, Throbbing Gristle. Los miembros de PTV incluían a Genesis P-Orridge, Peter Christopherson y Alex Fergusson. Luego se incorporaron colaboradores habituales como Monte Cazazza, David Tibet y John Balance. Más tarde Christopherson y Balance abandonaron PTV para concentrarse en Coil, en tanto Fergusson abandonó el grupo para enfocarse en proyectos de música electrónica. Con el tiempo se incorporaron otros miembros a la formación que navega por varios géneros como el rock experimental, pop psicodélico, post-punk y acid house, publicándose en varios sellos una extensa discografía de más de 200 discos que comprende también sus proyectos colaborativos.
“A Prayer for Derek Jarman” fue originalmente editado por el sello inglés Cold Spring en 1997 que consiste en un set de canciones guardadas en el archivo de Cold Spring, el que se reeditó y remasterizó con nuevo material gráfico. Este álbum consiste en grabaciones que utilizó PTV como banda sonora para las películas y vídeos de Derek Jarman, quien fue director de cine, escenógrafo, artista plástico y escritor británico. Empujó los límites del cine experimental y fue uno de los primeros cineastas en introducir la temática gay en el cine.
“A Prayer for Derek Jarman” -reeditado en junio 2025 por Cold Spring- consiste en seis canciones aperturando con “The Loops Of Mystical Union” que muestra un sonido postindustrial, con viñetas de ruido y atmósferas oscuras. Le sigue “Elipse Of Flowers” con aire pop-sicodélico que comprende delicados acordes de guitarra e xilófonos aéreos. En “Mylar Breeze (Parts 1 & 2)” las nostálgicas frases de piano envuelven a esta bella canción con su elegancia y prístino sonido. “Mylar Breeze (Part 3)” en tanto ofrece en un comienzo un cántico ceremonial atribuido a rituales tibetanos que se convierte en un mantra, para luego dar paso a pulcros acordes de piano que evocan los pasajes de “Mylar Breeze (Parts 1 & 2)”. “Prayer For Derek”, a través de grabaciones de campo, evoca los sonidos que circundaban por la cabaña de Jarman, en Dungeness, Kent, Inglaterra, como distintos tipos de aves, junto al vaivén de las olas que están delicadamente procesadas. A poco andar, la pasividad se termina, surgiendo gritos de lamento. Para finalizar, “Rites Of Reversal” continúa en esa zona sombría con gruñidos de animales que se acechan y se amenazan entre sí.
Psychic TV es impredecible, cuando se espera que perdure un ambiente idílico, casi de ensueño, sobreviene el miedo y nos adentramos en territorios oscuros.
Psychic TV (PTV) was formed in England in 1981 following the breakup of the iconic industrial music band Throbbing Gristle. The members of PTV included Genesis P-Orridge, Peter Christopherson, and Alex Fergusson. They were later joined by regular collaborators such as Monte Cazazza, David Tibet, and John Balance. Christopherson and Balance later left PTV to focus on Coil, while Fergusson left the group to focus on electronic music projects. Over time, other members joined the line-up, which navigates various genres such as experimental rock, psychedelic pop, post-punk and acid house, releasing an extensive discography of over 200 albums on various labels, including their collaborative projects.
‘A Prayer for Derek Jarman’ was originally released by the English label Cold Spring in 1997 and consists of a set of songs stored in the Cold Spring archive, which was reissued and remastered with new artwork. This album consists of recordings that PTV used as the soundtrack for the films and videos of Derek Jarman, who was a British film director, set designer, visual artist, and writer. He pushed the boundaries of experimental cinema and was one of the first filmmakers to introduce the gay issue into cinema.
‘A Prayer for Derek Jarman’ -reissued in June 2025 by Cold Spring- consists of six songs, opening with ‘The Loops Of Mystical Union,’ which features a post-industrial sound with vignettes of noise and dark atmospheres. This is followed by ‘Elipse Of Flowers’ with a psychedelic pop feel, featuring delicate guitar chords and airy xylophones. In ‘Mylar Breeze (Parts 1 & 2)’, nostalgic piano phrases envelop this beautiful song with its elegance and pristine sound. ‘Mylar Breeze (Part 3)’ begins with a ceremonial chant attributed to Tibetan rituals that becomes a mantra, then gives way to neat piano chords that evoke the passages of ‘Mylar Breeze (Parts 1 & 2)’. ‘Prayer For Derek’, through field recordings, evokes the sounds that surrounded Jarman’s cottage in Dungeness, Kent, England, such as different types of birds, along with the gently processed sound of the waves of the sea. Soon, the passivity ends, giving way to cries of lament. Finally, ‘Rites Of Reversal’ continues in this sombre vein with the growls of animals stalking and threatening each other.
Psychic TV is unpredictable: just when you expect an idyllic, almost dreamlike atmosphere to endure, fear sets in and we go into in a dark territory.
