O’Malley es más conocido por ser miembro fundador de la banda drone metal Sunn O))) y en sus 30 años del carrera artística se ha desarrollado en la música experimental, drone y doom metal, la composición y el diseño visual. Además, es miembro fundador de Khanate, Burning Witch, Thorr’s Hammer y el dúo KTL.
Originalmente este álbum estaba dentro de la suite «Les Sphères (effondrez-les) fases I-V», que incluyen las fases III y V para guitarra eléctrica, amplificadores y electrónica; interpretadas por Stephen O’Malley y Kali Malone y la Fase IV para percusión, interpretada por Eklekto, no obstante estas fases no se incluyen en este álbum.
Este disco fue grabado en distintos órganos de tubo en Les Grandes Orgues (Scherrer (1777), Walker (1867), Kuhn (1995) y en la Église Saint-François, Lausana, Suiza, en la Navidad de 2021.
“Spheres Collapser” consiste en dos composiciones de larga duración para órgano de tubos: “Phase I Organ” y “Phase II Organ” que son interpretadas junto a la destacada organista Kali Malone y Frederikke Hoffmeier (Puce Mary).
«Phase I Organ» es una pieza expansiva que evoluciona a través de sutiles modificaciones tímbricas; mientras emergen destellos en registros agudos, los graves se sostienen creando una marea sonora, penetrante e hipnótica. Aunque las variaciones son tenues, se revelan ante una escucha atenta. Hacia el final, el volumen se desvanece, pero persiste su carga emocional, que invita a la calma y la introspección.
Por el contrario, «Phase II Organ» es más intensa e inquietante, proyectando timbres que logran ser, simultáneamente, elevados y sombríos. Si «Phase I Organ» se percibe cercana a lo etéreo, «Phase II Organ» se siente profundamente terrenal, como el vértigo al borde de un precipicio.
La obra de Stephen O’Malley y Kali Malone transita por diversos estadios emocionales; es una propuesta que cala hondo, que invita a un viaje introspectivo, donde el cuerpo parece levitar, mientras se ve envuelto en melodías edificantes.

It is in this context that the multifaceted American artist, composer, guitarist, and visual artist Stephen O’Malley, based in Paris, is the author of the album ‘Spheres Collapser,’ co-released on February 27, 2026, by the Swedish label XCathedral and the Swiss label La Becque Editions.
O’Malley is best known as a founding member of the drone metal band Sunn O))) and, in his 30-year artistic career, has worked in experimental music, drone and doom metal, composition, and visual design. He is also a founding member of Khanate, Burning Witch, Thorr’s Hammer, and the duo KTL.
This album was originally part of the ‘Les Sphères (effondrez-les) suite, phases I-V,’ which include phases III and V for electric guitar, amplifiers, and electronics, performed by Stephen O’Malley and Kali Malone, and phase IV for percussion, performed by Eklekto. However, these phases are not included on this album.
This album was recorded on various pipe organs at Les Grandes Orgues (Scherrer (1777), Walker (1867), Kuhn (1995)) and at Église Saint-François, Lausanne, Switzerland, during Christmas 2021.
‘Spheres Collapser’ consists of two long compositions for pipe organ: ‘Phase I Organ’ and “Phase II Organ,” performed with the renowned organist Kali Malone and Frederikke Hoffmeier (Puce Mary).
‘Phase I Organ’ is an expansive piece that evolves through subtle timbral modifications; while flashes emerge in the high registers, the low registers are sustained, creating a penetrating and hypnotic tide of sound. Although the variations are subtle, they reveal themselves to attentive listening. Towards the end, the volume fades, but its emotional charge persists, inviting calm and introspection.
In contrast, ‘Phase II Organ’ is more intense and unsettling, projecting timbres that manage to be simultaneously soaring and somber. If ‘Phase I Organ’ feels close to the ethereal, ‘Phase II Organ’ feels profoundly earthly, like the vertigo at the edge of a precipice.
The work of Stephen O’Malley and Kali Malone navigate a spectrum of profound emotional states. Their work resonates with an immersive depth, inviting an introspective journey where the listener feels a sense of weightlessness, enveloped by transcendental uplifting melodies.
