Yanling’s music is a journey that broadens its avenues through the grandiloquent ambient washes
Natalja Yanling Romine aka Yanling es una productora de música electrónica y DJ suiza, nacida en Hong Kong que comenzó musicalmente en Zurich. Fue residente del RSO club de Berlín para las noches del sello Raster Media, en las que desplegó techno con incursiones de electro y breakbeat. Actualmente se encuentra más bien enfocada en su propuesta de atmósferas ambient / experimental que crea con su alias de Yanling y que describe como “fluida, envolvente y siempre cambiante». A dichas atmósferas se incorporan visuales como extensión del sonido que flotan en un horizonte donde no es posible visualizar sus límites.
Previo a fundar su propio sello Aurora Edition, nuestra protagonista publicó en forma independiente – entre 2019 y 2023 – cuatro discos: “Thara”, “Space n Bass”, “Siren” y “Lamo”. También edita en su sello su más reciente trabajo “Cymatic” (diciembre 2024), que consiste en seis tracks que navegan entre el drone, ambient y la experimentación.
La música de Yanling es un viaje que amplía sus avenidas a través de grandilocuentes baños de ambient que se despliegan por medio de los sintetizadores, junto a imágenes ensoñadoras.
¿Qué te animó a producir tu propia música?
«Crear mi propia música es la forma más pura de catarsis, una manera de desentrañar emociones, liberar cargas y articular lo que las palabras a menudo no logran captar. Me permite expresar mi mundo interior sin el peso de las expectativas, sin la necesidad de un público atado por el deber o el afecto. La música se escucha sin juzgar, abraza lo no dicho, convierte la soledad en algo profundo y rotundo».
En relación con el carácter etéreo de tu álbum ‘Cymatic’, ¿cuáles fueron las fuentes de inspiración?
«La inspiración surgió de la idea de un horizonte engullido por la bruma, una extensión indefinida donde la percepción se disuelve y los límites se desvanecen. Es como adentrarse en una inmensidad sin fin, donde la dirección deja de existir y el espacio se despliega sin límites. Una se encuentra vagando por un camino infinito, encontrando obstáculos que hay que cruzar, como en un sueño: fluido, envolvente y siempre cambiante».
¿Qué descubriste en el estreno de ‘Cymatic’ con la incorporación de un coro de cuatro mujeres? ¿Sonaba diferente a la versión del álbum?
«El estreno en directo de ‘Cymatic’ no fue una mera reproducción del álbum, sino una evolución de su esencia. Con el coro de cuatro mujeres, mi propia voz y las voces generadas por la IA (Inteligencia Artificial) entrelazadas, se convirtió en un tapiz de armonías en capas. Cuando el coro se dispersó por el escenario, el origen de las voces permaneció difuso, creando una presencia envolvente, casi espectral. Las transiciones se prolongaban en paisajes sonoros alargados y zumbantes, disolviendo cualquier expectativa clara de lo que vendría a continuación, una interminable extensión sónica en la que voces etéreas se encontraban con destellos de elementos futuristas, flotando como ecos de otro reino».
¿Qué papel desempeñan los visuales en tu música?
«Los visuales desempeñan un papel esencial en mi música, no sólo como acompañamiento, sino como extensión del sonido, dando forma a la arquitectura del espacio y fusionando la vista y el sonido en una experiencia singular. Crean un entorno en el que una puede dejarse llevar por las imágenes con los ojos abiertos o cerrados y dejarse transportar sólo por el sonido. Mi objetivo es que ambos caminos resulten igual de envolventes, tanto si se ven como si simplemente se sientan».
Tengo entendido que eres DJ residente en un club de Berlín donde pinchas techno. ¿Cómo complementa este papel de DJ su enfoque ambiental como Yanling?
«En este momento, estoy centrada principalmente en mi práctica de ambient experimental, desarrollando mi serie de conciertos y el propio sello. Me parece que es la dirección correcta, algo que me hace avanzar y me permite crecer. Mi pasado como DJ sigue formando parte de mí y mi energía está totalmente dedicada a lo que realmente ahora resuena en mí «.
¿Podrías contarnos de tus próximos proyectos?
“Mi próximo proyecto es seguir desarrollando la serie de conciertos de Aurora Edition en Zurich e Italia. Estamos trabajando en un nuevo lanzamiento, con un nuevo artista que está en preparación.
En cuanto a mí como artista, siento un profundo deseo de explorar nuevos destinos. Estoy estudiando residencias artísticas en la naturaleza, buscando un espacio para reconectar, encontrar un nuevo flujo creativo y reunir inspiración para mi próximo álbum. La vida en las grandes ciudades puede ser abrumadora; he vivido a este ritmo durante casi dos décadas. Ahora estoy dispuesta a respirar hondo, a enraizarme más y a entender el silencio, no sólo la ausencia de ruido, sino la tranquilidad que viene de dentro. Una cosa lleva a la otra. Anhelo la naturaleza”.
Natalja Yanling Romine aka Yanling is a Hong Kong-born Swiss electronic music producer and DJ who got her musical start in Zurich. She was a resident at the RSO club in Berlin for the Raster Media label nights, where she played techno with forays into electro and breakbeat. Currently she is more focused on her approach to ambient / experimental atmospheres which she creates under her Yanling alias and which she describes as ‘fluid, enveloping and ever-changing’. These atmospheres incorporate visuals as an extension of the sound that float on a horizon where it is not possible to visualise their limits.

What encouraged you to produce your own music?
«Creating my own music is the purest form of catharsis—a way to unravel emotions, release burdens, and articulate what words often fail to capture. It allows me to express my inner world without the weight of expectation, without the need for an audience bound by duty or affection. Music listens without judgment, embracing the unspoken, turning solitude into something deep and resounding.»
In relation to the ethereal character of the album ‘Cymatic’, what were the sources of inspiration?
«The inspiration stemmed from the idea of a horizon swallowed by haze, an undefined expanse where perception dissolves, and boundaries fade. It is like stepping into an endless vastness, where direction ceases to exist, and space unfolds without limit. You find yourself wandering along an infinite path, encountering hurdles that must be crossed, much like in a dream—fluid, immersive, and ever-shifting.»
What did you discover at the premiere of ‘Cymatic’ with the addition of a four-woman choir? Did it sound different from the album version?
«The live premiere of ‘Cymatic’ was not a mere reproduction of the album but an evolution of its essence. With the four-woman choir, my own voice, and AI-generated vocals interwoven, it became a tapestry of layered harmonies. As the choir was dispersed throughout the stage, the origin of the voices remained elusive, creating an immersive, almost spectral presence. Transitions stretched into elongated, droning soundscapes, dissolving any clear expectation of what would come next, an endless sonic expanse where ethereal vocals met glimpses of futuristic elements, hovering like echoes from another realm.»
What role do visuals play in your music?
«Visuals play an essential role in my music, not only as an accompaniment, but as an extension of sound, shaping the architecture of the space and merging sight and sonic into a singular experience. They create an environment where one can drift with open eyes, carried by the imagery or close them and let the sound alone transport them. My goal is for both paths to feel equally immersive, whether seen or simply felt.»
I understand that you are a resident DJ at a club in Berlin where you play techno sets. How does this DJ role complement your ambient approach as Yanling?
«At the moment, I’m mainly focused on my experimental ambient practice, developing my concert series and the label itself. It feels like the right direction; something that keeps me moving forward and allows me to grow. My DJ background is still a part of me, and my energy is fully dedicated to what truly resonates with me now.»
Could you please tell us about your upcoming projects?
«My upcoming project is to further develop the concert series under Aurora Edition in Zürich and Italy. We are preparing a new release, featuring a fresh new artist who is currently in the pipeline.
As for myself as an artist, I feel a deep urge to explore new destinations. I’m looking into artist residencies in nature, seeking a space to reconnect, find new creative flow, and gather inspiration for my next album. Life in big cities can be overwhelming; I have lived this rhythm for almost two decades. Now, I’m ready to breathe deeply, to ground myself more, and to understand silence —not just the absence of noise, but the quiet that comes from within. One leads to the other. I’m longing for nature.»
