DAL:UM
DAL:UM (traducido como: “seguir persiguiendo algo”) es un dúo afincado en Seúl fundado en 2008 por Ha Suyean y Hwang Hyeyoung, virtuosas de dos tipos diferentes de cítaras tradicionales coreanas, el gayageum (Ha Suyean) y el geomungo (Hwang Hyeyoung). Su música transita entre el minimalismo, el folk y la música de vanguardia. Si bien su interpretación en totalmente instrumental, tiene un correlato con la estructura canción.
El dúo tiene dos álbumes, el primero de ellos, “Similar and Different” publicado en en 2021 por el sello Tak:til de Glitterbeat y «Coexistence» que se editó a principios del presente mes. Debutaron en el Reino Unido en el K-Music Festival en 2021 como parte de una gira por el Reino Unido y los países nórdicos.
Dal:um -junto a sus colegas Park Jiha, Jambinai y Leenalchi- están a la vanguardia de la nueva música coreana.
“Coexistence” consiste en seis temas abriendo con “DOT”, un intrincado diálogo entre los instrumentos, haciendo contrapuntos con punteos que logran altura. “Cracking” se caracteriza por sus pulsos rítmicos marcados con algunos rasgueos se insinúan al flamenco. “Dodry” “Poison and Antidote” y “Alive” se inscriben en un formato canción con cuidadas y bellas líneas melódicas. Al cierre con “In the Deep” el dúo rasguea las cuerdas con intensidad como con delicadeza, con movimientos rápidos y ágiles.
DAL:UM logran a partir de sus instrumentos tradicionales, entregar una nueva propuesta sonora a través de experimentar con una combinación de acordes, timbres y resonancias que le imprimen un talante vanguardista a su música.
DAL:UM (translated as: ‘to keep pursuing something’) is a Seoul-based duo founded in 2008 by Ha Suyean and Hwang Hyeyoung, virtuosos of two different types of traditional Korean zithers, the gayageum (Ha Suyean) and the geomungo (Hwang Hyeyoung). Their music moves between minimalism, folk and avant-garde music. Although their performance is entirely instrumental, it has a correlation with the song structure.
The duo has two albums, the first one, ‘Similar and Different’ released in 2021 on Glitterbeat’s Tak:til label, and ‘Coexistence’ which was released earlier this month. They made their UK debut at the K-Music Festival in 2021 as part of a UK and Nordic tour.
Dal:um – along with fellow musicians Park Jiha, Jambinai and Leenalchi – are at the forefront of new Korean music.
‘Coexistence’ consists of six tracks opening with “DOT”, an intricate dialogue between instruments, counterpointing with soaring plucks. ‘Cracking’ is characterised by rhythmic pulses marked with some strumming hints of flamenco. ‘Dodry’, “Poison and Antidote” and “Alive” are in a song structure with gorgeous melodic lines. In the closing with ‘In the Deep’ the duo strum the strings with intensity as well as delicacy, with fast and agile movements.
DAL:UM manage to use their traditional instruments to deliver a new sound proposal by experimenting with a chord combination, timbres and resonances that give to their music an avant-garde feel.
