handsandnumbers es el seudónimo del artista sonoro italiano Giuseppe Torre, quien es profesor asociado de prácticas artísticas digitales en la Universidad de Limerick, Irlanda. El centra su trabajo en las prácticas artísticas digitales, la tecnología/cultura de código abierto y la filosofía.

Este trabajo musical tienen como propósito de tener la forma de ser una actuación en directo creada mediante el uso exclusivo de software libre de código abierto (FLOSS). “Incidental Effects” se ha representado en live-coding en: Piksel Festival 2022 (Bergen Noruega) y en la International Computer Music Conference 2023 (Shenzen, China). Con el Live coding se pueden generar música, imagen, coreografías y textos a través de dar instrucciones a las computadoras en forma de algoritmos.

“Incidental Effects” contiene tres tracks en los que se presentan distintas combinaciones de sonidos digitales en los que prevalecen las pulsaciones rítmicas y sinuosas melodías.

Independiente de cómo está elaborada esta música – con software de código abierto –me evoca a la música del techno inteligente de Autechre y Black Dog con sus formas robotizadas y sonido crudo sintetizado.

Trayendo a colación el mensaje final de su último track “c3” que dice que el efecto del programa es incidental, en este caso, los efectos de la música sobre quienes la escuchan, no tiene relación con la tecnología utilizada.

handsandnumbers is the pseudonym of Italian sound artist Giuseppe Torre, who is an associate professor of digital art practices at the University of Limerick, Ireland. He focuses his work on digital art practices, open source technology/culture and philosophy.

This musical work is intended to take the form of a live performance created through the exclusive use of Free and Open Source Software (FLOSS). ‘Incidental Effects’ has been performed live-coded at: Piksel Festival 2022 (Bergen Norway) and at the International Computer Music Conference 2023 (Shenzen, China). With live coding, music, images, choreographies and texts can be generated by giving instructions to computers in the form of algorithms.

‘Incidental Effects’ contains three tracks featuring different combinations of digital sounds in which rhythmic pulsations and sinuous melodies prevail.

Regardless of how this music is crafted – with open-source software – it reminds me the Intelligent techno’s Autechre and Black Dog music with its robotic shapes and raw synthesized sound.

Bringing up the final message of their last track ‘c3’ which says that the effect of the programme is incidental, in this case, the effects of the music on the listener are not related to the technology used.
