Jacob Kirkegaard
Jacob Kirkegaard es un artista y compositor y grabador de campo danés que trabaja en entornos naturales y urbanos específicos, como los glaciares en el Ártico, géiseres subterráneos, habitaciones vacías en Chernóbil, Ucrania y sonidos generados por el propio oído interno humano. Con estas fuentes sonoras Kirkegaard produce grabaciones que utiliza en composiciones, o bien con imágenes de vídeo en instalaciones visuales y espaciales.
Kirkegaard ha publicado en sellos como Touch (UK), Important Records (USA), mAtter (JAP), VON Archives (FR), Holotype Editions (GR) & Posh Isolation (DK). Es miembro fundador del colectivo de arte sonoro freq_out y en 2016, fue artista sonoro residente en el St. John’s College de la Universidad de Oxford (Reino Unido).
Como cada lanzamiento en el sello de vanguardia de California, The Helen Scardale Agency, dirigido por el músico experimental norteamericano y crítico musical Jim Haynes, es una propuesta que despliega oscuros paisajes sonoros que se sitúan en el dark ambient y noise.
“Snowblind” – publicado en enero de este año – está inspirado en un hecho histórico de finales del Siglo XIX, cuando un equipo de exploradores suecos intentaron en forma fallida alcanzar el Polo Norte en globo. Este hecho que contiene una fuerte carga emocional, se refleja en lo que señala Kirkegaard en la nota de prensa: “Quería crear un álbum frío y hostil, en el que no hubiera escapatoria, calor ni final feliz”.
Un entorno gélido cruza todo el álbum junto a una atmósfera inquietante, que incluye líneas de sintes analógicos ambientales lúgubres, chirridos desconcertantes y densos vientos que soplan con furia, como en el track de apertura, “Ascend” y que en “Astray” toma forma de ruidos industriales. “Wreckage” con sus golpeteos fantasmagóricos crea un halo espeluznante, mientras “Torment” despliega ondas sonoras serpenteantes y subterráneas que permean el track de cierra de este disco, “Perish”.
Jacob Kirkegaard nos adentra a ese mundo existente y despiadado a través de una sombría y texturada electrónica.
Jacob Kirkegaard is a Danish artist, composer and field recordist who works in specific natural and urban environments, such as glaciers in the Arctic, underground geysers, empty rooms in Chernobyl, Ukraine and sounds generated by the human inner ear itself. With these sound sources Kirkegaard produces recordings that he uses in compositions, or with video images in visual and spatial installations.
Kirkegaard has published on labels such as Touch (UK), Important Records (USA), mAtter (JAP), VON Archives (FR), Holotype Editions (GR) & Posh Isolation (DK). He is a founding member of the sound art collective freq_out and in 2016, he was sound artist in residence at St. John’s College, University of Oxford (UK).
Like every release on the California avant-garde label, The Helen Scardale Agency, run by American experimental musician and music critic Jim Haynes, it’s a proposition that unfolds dark soundscapes that sit within dark ambient and noise.
‘Snowblind’ – released in January this year – is inspired by a historical event at the end of the 19th century, when a team of Swedish explorers unsuccessfully attempted to reach the North Pole by balloon. This emotionally charged event is reflected in what Kirkegaard says in the press release: «I wanted to create a cold and hostile album, where there is no escape, no warmth and no happy ending.»
An icy environment runs throughout the album alongside a haunting atmosphere, including gloomy ambient analogue synth lines, unnerving chirps and dense winds blowing furiously, as in the opening track, ‘Ascend’, and which in ‘Astray’ takes the form of industrial noises. ‘Wreckage’ with its ghostly pounding creates an eerie halo, while “Torment” unfolds snaking, subterranean sound waves that permeate the album’s closing track, “Perish”.
Jacob Kirkegaard draws us into that existing, merciless world through bleak, textured electronica.
