Rod Cooper, “Friction”, Room40, 2004
Rod Cooper fue escultor y más tarde diseñador de muebles. Ambas disciplinas lo inspiran para construir sus propios instrumentos – metales en sus distintas formas – que pueden tomarle hasta tres años en diseñarlos y semanas en materializarlos.
“Friction” es el resultado de diez años elaborando instrumentos no tradicionales. Me recuerda al post-industrial de Nurse With Wound, SPK, :Zoviet*France y la música concreta. Pero el trabajo de Cooper es más minimal, en su disco hay destellos con timbres, mucha resonancia pero también silencio que se apoya sobre amplios espacios, los cuales los agregaría a la declaración de Cooper, en el sentido que al igual que el instrumento es parte de la composición, diría que el espacio también forma parte de ésta.
Los metales también se acompañan de cuerdas del mismo material que al parecer son amplificas para lograr dichas resonancias. Los sonidos que se logran son muy inesperados e interesantes, donde incluso a veces se logran ciertas armonías.

Rod Cooper former a sculptor and a furniture designer. Both disciplines inspire him to build his own instruments – metals in its different forms – that can take him up to three years in designing them and weeks in construct them.
‘Friction’ is the result of ten years working nontraditional instruments. It remembers me of postindustrial of Nurse With Wound, SPK, :Zoviet*France and concrète musique. But Cooper’s work is minimalist, in this disc have sparkles with timbres, a lot of resonance but also silence that leans on wide spaces, which I would add them to Cooper’s statement, in the sense that the instrument is the composition, so I would say that space also comprises of this one.
The metals also are together with cords of the same material that apparently are amplified in order to obtain these resonances. The sounds that are obtained are very unexpected and interesting, where sometimes certain harmonies are even obtained.
