Push For Night
Push For Night es un dúo experimental y electroacústico de Nueva York integrado por Oliver Chapoy y James Elliott. Su tercer álbum, «That Porous Line», llega a través del reconocido sello australiano Room40 tras la publicación de sus dos trabajos previos: el homónimo «Push For Night» (The Tapeworm Bandcamp, 2021/2023) y «Lapsed Gasps» (Room40, 2023), este último grabado junto al renombrado percusionista estadounidense Jon Mueller.
«That Porous Line» («Esa línea difusa») navega por las aguas del dark ambient, el post-industrial y la electroacústica. Sin embargo, cabe aclarar que sus atmósferas sosegadas permiten que el disco habite también espacios luminosos. Un ejemplo es la pieza inaugural, A Good Hosing Down, coescrita junto al guitarrista David Daniell, quien aquí se enfoca en los sintetizadores ambientales.
El recorrido avanza con «Fang Vendor», donde un beat aletargado marca un ritmo sutil, mientras que «It’s Sure To Be Dark If You Shut Your Eyes» combina texturas rugosas y ruidosas con un piano flotante. En «Bait Is Lowered» se advierte un collage de sonidos sintéticos manipulados digitalmente que configuran cuadros abstractos, seguido por «Turned Slowly And Slowly Turned», pieza que despliega ecos suspendidos de guitarra mientras una muralla de ruido se cierne por el espacio. El cierre llega con la pieza homónima, donde la guitarra ambiental de David Daniell se funde en atmósferas inquietantes que, hacia el final, revelan texturas étnicas y una miríada de sonidos orgánicos.
En este disco, Push For Night realiza un trabajo prolijo con las texturas, los silencios y los sonidos acústicos reconvertidos digitalmente. Haciendo honor a su título, la propuesta carece de barreras fijas: los tonos, los zumbidos (drones) y los detalles acústicos se disuelven unos dentro de otros, difuminando por completo el límite entre el ruido abstracto y la melodía.

Their third album, ‘That Porous Line,’ is released via the renowned Australian label Room40, following their two previous works: the self-titled ‘Push For Night’ (The Tapeworm, 2021/2023) and ‘Lapsed Gasps’ (Room40, 2023), the latter recorded alongside acclaimed American percussionist Jon Mueller.
‘That Porous Line’ navigates the waters of dark ambient, post-industrial, and electroacoustic music. However, its tranquil atmospheres also allow the album to inhabit luminous spaces. A prime example is the opening track, ‘A Good Hosing Down,’ co-written with guitarist David Daniell, who focuses here on ambient synthesizers instead of his signature strings.
The sonic journey continues with ‘Fang Vendor,’ where a lethargic beat sets a subtle rhythm, while ‘It’s Sure To Be Dark If You Shut Your Eyes’ intertwines rough, noisy textures with a floating piano. In ‘Bait Is Lowered,’ a collage of digitally manipulated synthetic sounds shapes abstract soundscapes. This is followed by ‘Turned Slowly And Slowly Turned,’ a track that unfurls suspended guitar echoes as a wall of noise looms overhead. The album concludes with the title track, in which Daniell’s ambient guitar dissolves into unsettling atmospheres that gradually reveal ethnic textures and a myriad of organic sounds.
Throughout this album, Push For Night skillfully balances textures, silences, and digitally reworked acoustic sounds. True to its title, the work rejects fixed boundaries: tones, drones, and acoustic details dissolve into one another, completely blurring the line between abstract noise and melody.
